| The US Falls Deeper Into Debt to the Rest of the World - Jun. 10, 2004 |
|
The latest "Z.1" data became available from the Fed earlier today. The numbers are current through 3/31/04, and I plan to get out more detailed information sometime next week. In the meantime, here are some numbers people always find of significant interest:
(1) As of 3/31/04, foreign investors held US financial assets totaling $8.427 trillion, while their US financial liabilities stood at $3.255 trillion. Thus, the United States had a net liability to foreigners of $5.172 trillion, up $583 billion from a revised $4.589 trillion as of 12/31/03.
(2) As of 3/31/04 foreign investors' holdings of US Treasury securities stood at $1.653 trillion, up $170 billion from 12/31/03. As of 3/31, foreigners held 39.9% of total Treasury outstandings, up from 37.0% on 12/31.
