I will publish a more comprehensive analysis of today's trade figures shortly. In the meantime, based on the Commerce Department's report of earlier this morning, the US trade deficit (goods and services) came in at $61.0 billion in February, compared with a revised January deficit of $58.5 billion. (The January figure was originally reported at a negative $58.3 billion.)

The February deficit was a record, surpassing November 2004's then-record shortfall of $59.4 billion.

Much more to come.
