Revisions to US Trade Data   - Jul. 11, 2005

Summary

The Commerce Department's report on US international trade for April, released on 6/10, contained a good deal of revised data, some of it going back as far as 1992. This missive provides a recap of those revisions.
_____

Last month's trade report (released 6/10 and covering results through April 2005) contained revised data, some of it going back as far as 1992. On Wednesday (7/13), the Commerce Department will release May data. In advance of that report, I wanted to provide updated numbers for the series I generally analyze and discuss.

The Numbers in General

Based on the Commerce Department's report of last month, the US trade deficit (goods and services) came in at $57.0 billion in April, compared with a revised March deficit of $53.6 billion. (The March figure was originally reported at minus $55.0 billion.)

April's trade deficit was the result of record imports totaling $163.38 billion, and exports totaling $106.42 billion, also a record. These figures compared with respective revised import/export figures for March of $156.91 billion and $103.35 billion.

The reported trade deficit for 2005's first four months exceeded last year's January-April red ink by a substantial $41.5 billion, or 22.1%.

Crude oil imports were equal to 8.6% of total imports in April, up from 8.5% in March. In April, crude imports were equal to 10.3% of goods-only imports, which were reported at $136.7 billion.
