| An Explanation of the Hiatus in GRA New Material Postings - Aug. 16, 2005 |
|
Twice in less than the last three weeks, violent storms have swept across this area -- indeed, across the entire Northeast. These have been the result of cold fronts passing through the area, providing some relief, albeit brief, to what has been a summer of genuinely oppressive heat and humidity.
The storms have not been without consequence. The week before last, we lost electricity for about 14 hours. This past weekend's storms resulted in the loss of telephone service for about 30 hours. It was restored late this afternoon. I feel lucky, though, since other towns in the immediate area suffered the acute damage usually associated with tornados, which I personally think were the source of at least some of the damage. Ironically, determining this has actually delayed some repair activities, as repairs awaited "official" adjudication of the specific cause of the damage.
Needless to say, the electronic distribution of research material and the maintenance of a website are not aided by the lack of electricity and telephone service. So, I apologize to clients for any resulting inconvenience, although continuity in getting critical material out has been relatively unscathed.
(As an aside, this experience provides a sound but frightening example of the chaos that would ensue, should terrorists eventually succeed in seriously disrupting America's Internet infrastructure.)
Over the next several days, I anticipate a rather large stream of both past and current material. The great virtue of the GRA website's archive feature is the ability it affords clients to go back anytime they wish to access posted material. And for added convenience, each piece directly e-mailed to clients now contains the article's specific link.
My immense thanks to everyone for their understanding!
